Steve Chicken Little Ballmer

by Sage Lewis

Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer has some pretty extreme views for the business world. I think he might be looking in the mirror too closely when he talks about the business world as a whole.
Check out our small business news site.

Google Shrunk its Search Results Page

Honestly I didn’t notice the difference until I read from Mashable that Google have changed the way it displays search results. As usual, I couldn’t find any announcement about it at the Official Google Blog. So, I take it to mean that Google may still be ironing out some kinks related to this “enhancement.”
So, what are the changes? There are three “unnoticeable” things actually. First, which should have been quite obvious I were closely paying attention was the shrunk Google logo at the top of the page.  Then there is also now a big space in between the search box and the first row of the search results page.
As to the search results itself, these are now indented but the most significant change was the removal of the page size indicator. This indicator gives you an idea of how long it will take for the page to load. Google also […]

Search and Community Track at SES San Jose: NACA’s Save The Dream Tour

At SES San Jose 2009, I’ve been asked to make a solo presentation to kick of the Search and Community Track. The title of the session is “How to Optimize for Search & Engage the Community.”
I’ve been working on my presentation, but it lacked a compelling case study that illustrated how a community organization had used search engine optimization and YouTube video to generate measurable results. I had planned to show examples of videos created by Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, Monty Python, and Blendtec, but plans have a way of changing.
Then, I got involved with the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA), a national non-profit community advocacy and homeownership organization headquartered in Boston.
NACA is organizing a series of Save the Dream events to help homeowners avoid foreclosure, restructure home loans, and reduce mortgage rates. They have already held events in Columbia, SC, Stamford, CT, and Washington, […]

As Google Book Search Gets Better, Here Comes the Anti-Trust Regulators

So while U.S. Anti-Trust Regulators are planning to investigate Google’s deal with book publishers to settle copyright issues amounting to $125m, Google continues to make Book Search a better and worthwhile service for their users.

If you’ve been following this issue which has been dragging on since perhaps the day Google Book Search’s inception, you’d remember that Google has received so many criticisms because of this project. And so it is not surprising that Google would not  bother the  investigation that much.
So, anyway it’s something that is yet to happen so we might as well talk about the new feature of Google Book Search that we mentioned.
If you would recall, during the early part of May Google introduced searching inside books wherein the context of search results can be viewed, sorted by relevancy as well as flipped through while users are viewing books.
The new feature adds a cool feature via a […]

FriendFeed Launches Real-Time Search; Includes Facebook and Twitter Submissions

Buzz has been building about real-time search. Of course, you can search real-time Tweets on Twitter, Facebook is testing search on its live Feed, and Bing just added limited Twitter search to its engine.
Now, FriendFeed is launching real-time search and it has the potential to be the mackdaddy of them all.
Here’s why. FriendFeed is a social aggregator. It’s a one-stop shop to check and update a bunch of different networks, blogs, etc. Now, you can search all of that in real-time.
The drawback? It only searches what people submit to FriendFeed. Whoever does that can basically say “Check” in the chess match of social real-time search.
Still, this is a tremendous step in that direction. Even better, FriendFeed has released an embeddable real-time search widget you can put on your website.
What do you think of FriendFeed real-time search? Let us know by leaving a comment.

Google Gives in to Pentagon Demands to Remove Images of Military Bases

After detailed, street-level photographs of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas appeared in Google’s controversial “Street View”, the Pentagon acted quickly to have the images removed, calling them a threat to national security.  Because of this security threat, Google is no longer permitted to take pictures of military installations.
Google takes pictures of locations in […]

Yahoo! Steals Search Share from Google in January 2009

Yahoo! gained 0.5 percentage points in comScore search engine rankings for January 2009. Google just happened to lose the same amount of percentage points during the same month.
But they’re not the only two swapping points. Microsoft stole 0.2% from Ask.com.
These are small percentage points, so things mostly stayed steady. If these trends were to keep […]
